Fast Track to Fun

Train enthusiasts from far and wide came to see Millom Railway & Scale Modellers’ Railway Exhibition 2008. The event was held at Millom Network Centre on Saturday and Sunday, 6th and 7th September.

Participants began the gruelling set up the evening before the event, and were hard at it again Saturday morning to be ready for the crowds that began arriving early to sneak a peek. As young and old alike starting flooding through the Centre’s doors, the place quickly became a full fledged bustling exhibition hall, full of the sounds of train engines and whistles, excited squeals of delight from small children, and the warm greetings of old and new acquaintances.

The ladies of the MR&SM held a tombola to raise funds for the club. Over a hundred pounds was raised over two days time, with three large tables full of donated items such as pizza kits, alcohol, toys, books, and nik-naks.

The event brought nearly 400 people to Millom Network Centre, which transformed six large rooms from conference venues and IT suites to a venue worthy of a crowd pleaser such as the Millom Railway & Scale Modellers’ Exhibition. A beautiful catered lunch was also provided for the stall holders by John and Joy Fernley of the Cambridge House Hotel.  A range of nice items from roasted chicken legs, ham and beetroot sandwiches, pizza, quiche and Victoria sponge were all well received by the club members. MNC’s offerings of inexpensive coffee and tea, along with crisps, chocolate bars and Genoa cakes was well received by the public.

The volunteers at the Network Centre met many nice and interesting people at this exhibition, and were sad to see it all come to an end on Sunday evening. They watched on as Kevin Smith, creator of the Midsomer Mardy (seen left), received the best at show Vic Simpson Memorial Shield.

It took nearly three hours for everything to be disassembled and loaded up, with the final participants to leave being a group of modellers heading back to Aberdeen, Scotland. A nice time was had by all; exhibitors, MNC volunteers and most importantly- the wonderful public that made the exhibition a success. Thank you!
