Stephe Cove is the tutor for the popular "Moving on with Computers," a natural follow-on to the “Computing for the First Time” course- which he also tutors. Both courses are held at Millom Network Centre through Adult Education.

The class is equally attended by men and women, and the age range of students is between 30 and 70 years. Stephe says the best thing about this course is that the students dictate what they learn according to their individual needs and desires. The course isn't taught to a mandated outcome. After observing the class for some time, it was apparent that this was what the students appreciated most about the course.

Peter Foord was working with Adobe Photoshop because he is an avid wildlife photographer and wanted to do more with his photos. "I'm also taking the digital photography course here at the Centre on Wednesdays- they really do tie up well together. Photoshop is fairly difficult and I needed to do more with it."

The Kepplewray Project, based in Broughton-in-Furness, was looking at the possibility of setting up a database but didn't know if Microsoft Access was a good fit for their organisation, or if they would need to invest in a more expensive alternative. By sending Frances Couch on the course, they could learn about the Microsoft programme and decide how to proceed "I've used it [Access] before, so this is really a refresher for me, but I also needed more in-depth knowledge about it. Kepplewray chose the Network Centre's Adult Education course not only because it was the closest to us, but also because the course was offered during office hours, which is really convenient. I didn't want to take night classes. It's nice because the course is self-guided. Because of the way it is taught, I think anyone would be able to take this course."

Glenys Partridge, a dedicated volunteer to several organisations in the area, joined the class after having first taken the beginner's computer course. "The first course taught me to do the simple things such as e-mail, working with my digital camera and keyboarding skills, but I wanted to go on and learn to do more with the computer- I'm tired of asking other people for help, I want to be able to do it myself. I'm working on Excel spreadsheets now because it would help with my volunteer work. I think as long as a person is familiar with the computer keyboard, the class is easy enough to understand."

Other students were learning Microsoft Word and even how to enjoy music online! Computers are a great thing, and Millom Network Centre's Adult Education is a great place to learn. The courses are convenient and relevant to today's lifestyle, they offer a knowledge base that can be built upon and expanded, and the courses have a low student to tutor ratio which improves the learning process.
